Our note
This is the tour with a real walk in it, so footwear matters twice over. Feet get wet getting in and out of the kayak, and the boardwalk is rough and uneven, so bring dry socks and shoes that can handle both.

What the children do

A 4.5 hour guided trip to Meares Island, published at $144 per person plus a 1% Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Park fee. Paddlers cross to the island, land, and walk the rustic Big Tree Trail boardwalk among old growth cedars. Guides talk about the rainforest ecosystem and the history of the fight to protect the trees.

They take the shore lesson, paddle along the shorelines of Meares Island, then land and walk the wild winding, rustic Big Tree Trail on a rough boardwalk among cedars that stand hundreds of feet tall, while the guide tells them how the trees came to be protected. Then they paddle back. Anyone under 16 rides in the front of a double kayak with an adult.

Good to know

Four and a half hours split between paddling and a forest walk, all of it outdoors. Washrooms, anywhere to eat and any shelter from the weather are not mentioned on the site, and bus parking is not addressed, so a phone call is worth it.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give two different top ages for a family tour, 12 in one place and 14 in another. Both agree the youngest is 9. Worth settling when you book if you have a 13 or 14 year old in the group.
Sources disagree. There is a tribal park fee added on top of the tour price, and the site gives it as 1 percent in one place and 1.5 percent in another. It is small either way, but ask for the total when you book so the invoice matches.
