Our note
This is the cheapest way to bring a small group, but admission is by donation rather than free, so agree what you will give before you arrive. The challenge comes in two reading levels, which helps when the children are a range of ages. Nothing can be eaten or drunk inside, so plan lunch elsewhere.

What the children do

The museum is open to drop-in visitors during its posted hours and admission is by donation, with a suggested minimum of $5.00 per person. Three exhibition rooms hold hands-on displays and the media centre has a seating area with twelve self-guided videos. The Museum Detective Challenge is free and comes in two versions depending on reading level, and is picked up at the visitor services desk. There is also a hands-on lesson on operating a real lighthouse foghorn.

Pick up a free detective challenge at the visitor services desk and work the clues through the exhibition rooms, then colour in a Sointula Museum Detective Certificate with the museum's crayons and pencil crayons. They can pump the 1905 Pulteney Point foghorn, browse the Co-op store counters, use the first bilingual switchboard in British Columbia and sit in the media centre to watch short videos.

Good to know

A short indoor visit at your own pace, with washrooms and a step free main floor, and a seated media room if the children need a rest. The site sets no price, no age and no group size for a drop-in visit, so ask what a donation should look like for a group.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different school group prices, $5.00 a child on one and $6.00 a youth on the other. Both agree that two adults come free. We show the lower one, so ask which is current when you book.
Sources disagree. For a general group tour one page says $6.00 a person for everyone and another says $6.00 for young people and $8.00 for adults. Check which one applies to your adults when you book, so the total is not a surprise.
Sources disagree. Their visit page and the panel at the bottom of every page give different opening seasons. One says daily from mid May to the end of September and by appointment the rest of the year, the other says daily from June 1 to September 15 and then three afternoons a week. Call or text before you set a date.
