What it actually looks like

Our note
The whole visit is indoors and the museum suggests about an hour, so it suits a class that can look and listen rather than run. The foghorn sits in the Rust Room on the lower level, which is opened by staff through a separate downstairs door, so ask for it to be open before you arrive. Getting there means a ferry to Malcolm Island and then a 350 metre walk left from the dock, so build the crossing into your day.

What the children do

A guided tour of the exhibitions for a class, led by the museum's volunteers. The exhibitions can cover technology, early Finnish settler history, fishing, the development of a small community and more, and the museum will shape the tour around what the class needs. Tour length varies and the museum recommends about an hour. Tours run year round and all of them must be pre-booked. The price is $5.00 per child with two accompanying adults free.

Walk three exhibition rooms with a guide, looking at Finnish settlers' belongings, the Co-op store counters, photo albums and the fishing, logging and farming gear in the Rust Room. They can try the real 1905 foghorn from Pulteney Point Lighthouse, use the first bilingual switchboard in British Columbia, and sit in the media centre to watch short videos about island life.

Good to know

Washrooms are on site, the main floor is step free by a ramp, and strollers are allowed although some aisles are narrow. No food or drink is allowed inside, so lunch has to happen somewhere else, and nothing is published about parking a bus or about how many children can come at once.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different school group prices, $5.00 a child on one and $6.00 a youth on the other. Both agree that two adults come free. We show the lower one, so ask which is current when you book.
Sources disagree. For a general group tour one page says $6.00 a person for everyone and another says $6.00 for young people and $8.00 for adults. Check which one applies to your adults when you book, so the total is not a surprise.
Sources disagree. Their visit page and the panel at the bottom of every page give different opening seasons. One says daily from mid May to the end of September and by appointment the rest of the year, the other says daily from June 1 to September 15 and then three afternoons a week. Call or text before you set a date.
