What it actually looks like

Our note
Forty five minutes is the published length and the rooms are small, so a big group will move through in waves. Outside the summer the museum is open three afternoons a week, so a tour on any other day has to be arranged by phone or text first.

What the children do

A guided tour of the exhibitions led by the museum's volunteers, digging into the early Finnish settlers' experiences. The museum describes it as about 45 minutes and ideal for groups of 5 or more, and says guests are welcome to stay and enjoy the museum before or after the tour. Tours run year round and must be pre-booked. The price on their visit page is $6.00 per person. Groups of 5 or more can also call or text to arrange a time outside the regular summer opening hours.

Follow a volunteer through three exhibition rooms of settlers' belongings, Co-op store counters, photo albums and fishing, logging and farming gear, then stay on afterwards to watch videos in the media centre or pump the 1905 foghorn in the Rust Room.

Good to know

Everything happens indoors on one main floor, with washrooms on site and a ramp at the door. Food and drink are not allowed inside, and the museum does not publish a maximum group size or any notice period, so settle both when you call.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different school group prices, $5.00 a child on one and $6.00 a youth on the other. Both agree that two adults come free. We show the lower one, so ask which is current when you book.
Sources disagree. For a general group tour one page says $6.00 a person for everyone and another says $6.00 for young people and $8.00 for adults. Check which one applies to your adults when you book, so the total is not a surprise.
Sources disagree. Their visit page and the panel at the bottom of every page give different opening seasons. One says daily from mid May to the end of September and by appointment the rest of the year, the other says daily from June 1 to September 15 and then three afternoons a week. Call or text before you set a date.
