What it actually looks like

Our note
This is the only way the site offers to bring children under 10, and taking the whole boat means you set the pace. It is one price for the boat no matter how many come, so it only makes sense for a group large enough to share it, and the stewardship fee is charged per head on top.

What the children do

A private charter of the whole vessel, the Eleni Jane, a 33 foot Titan rigid hull inflatable boat, for a full day of grizzly bear viewing of eight to nine hours with Mike Willie as the guide. It runs in June, July and August by request. The price is CA$6,500 for the entire vessel plus 5 percent GST and a $35 per person salmon stewardship fee. The site says the charter takes any group size and has no minimum age, unlike the scheduled day tour. Breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks, all safety equipment and flotation suits are included. It is booked online by choosing Family Charter in the booking widget.

Spend a full day on a small open boat with only their own group aboard, in flotation suits, travelling out to the bear rivers and back. They watch grizzlies from the boat at a distance, look for whales, dolphins and eagles on the way, and eat on board. The site says the boat travels at the pace of the youngest children.

Good to know

The price, the season, the boat and the fact that there is no minimum age are all published. Nothing is said about how many people the boat holds, washrooms, or how far ahead to book, so ask when you call.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different prices for children aged 10 to 16 on the lodge package. One says 60 percent of the adult price, the other says 40 percent. Get the number confirmed in writing before you pay a deposit.
