Public day sail
What it actually looks like
What the children do
A five hour sailing on one of the schooners, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, open to anyone who can take an active part in sailing the ship. The site says all ages are welcome but the number of children under 12 is limited, and each child must be accompanied by a responsible adult and wear a personal floatation device, which is provided. The fee is $125 per person, or $100 per person for a current SALTS society member, with membership covering one or two discounted day sails a year depending on the type. In 2026 the sailings are Friday May 15 and Saturday May 23 from the SALTS Dock at Swift Street Landing, and Sunday September 6 and Monday September 7 from Ship Point in Victoria's Inner Harbour. Places are requested through an online reservation form and assigned first come first served, with a wait list if the date is full. Check in is 15 minutes before the sailing. Everyone brings a bag lunch and water.
After a watch group orientation and safety briefing they haul lines and handle sails, stand watch at the bow or the helm, take a turn at the wheel to steer the ship, and climb the rigging if they want to, with the Victoria shoreline and the Olympic Peninsula in view.
Good to know
Five hours afloat with a toilet below deck, a packed lunch and no shelter beyond what you wear. Boarding is at the SALTS dock on Swift Street or at Ship Point depending on the date, and there is no parking of its own, so allow time to find a spot downtown and walk.
