Our note
The fee buys the whole ship, not a seat, so what it costs each family depends entirely on how many young people you bring. Dates are settled roughly a year out and returning groups get first refusal, so plan two years ahead rather than one. There is a free day sail for grade 8 to 12 teachers each September if you want to try the ship before you commit a class.

What the children do

A four or five day residential voyage for a school, post secondary programme or youth group, sailing from Victoria's Upper Harbour to the Gulf Islands aboard the Pacific Swift or the Pacific Grace. Open to participants aged 13 to 22. Each ship takes 18 to 30 trainees in total, young people and leaders together, and up to four adults may join each trip, including a minimum of one male and one female teacher, leader or chaperone. The fee is for the whole ship and includes all meals aboard, sail training materials and equipment. Fall 2026 to Spring 2027 rates are $38,892.00 plus GST for a five day Monday to Friday trip and $30,996.00 plus GST for a four day trip in a week with a Monday or Friday statutory holiday. Fall 2027 to Spring 2028 rates are $40,080.00 and $31,920.00 plus GST. Groups typically arrive at the dock at 10:00 am to begin boarding at 10:30 am, and the ship returns by 3:00 pm to disembark by 3:30 pm on the last day. Bookings are finalised about a year ahead and current groups get first option on the following year.

Haul on lines and handle the sails, take a turn at the wheel and on watch, learn navigation, knots and the parts of the ship, and row the ship's dories ashore to beaches and local marine parks. They sleep in bunks below deck, eat at a table in the hold and take a turn at galley chores.

Good to know

Meals, bunks and all the sail training gear are included, and each sleeping area below deck has a toilet and sink. There are no showers, and nothing is published about wheelchair access aboard or about what happens in bad weather, so it is worth a call.

Washrooms
These multipurpose areas each have bunks, a table for dining, and a single occupancy bathroom ("head") with sink and toilet.
Lunch space
Trip fees include all meals aboard ship. The main hold has a table for dining and is open to the galley area. Day sail passengers bring a bag lunch and water.
