What it actually looks like

Our note
This is the one to ask for with a preschool group. It is the only vessel the site describes as suitable from age 3, it is heated, it has a washroom aboard and the children can go inside when they have had enough of the wind. It carries 12, so a group of more than ten children plus adults will not fit in one sailing.

What the children do

The same two and a half to three hour whale and sea otter tour, run daily aboard the Star Light, a covered vessel carrying up to 12 with a heated cabin, glass all around with window defog, a large back deck and a washroom on board. Adults pay $169 and the child fare of $139 is listed for ages 3 to 12. The vessels page says the Star Light is suitable for passengers aged 3 years and older. A $10 fuel surcharge, a $3 wildlife and ecosystem research and education fee and 5% GST are added at payment. A group discount is offered for parties of 6 or more, who are asked to phone.

Sit inside a heated cabin with glass all around and watch for Grey whales, sea otters, sea lions, seals, porpoise and bald eagles, then step out onto the back deck when the boat stops for a closer look. Every passenger wears a self inflating collar.

Good to know

There is a washroom on this vessel and restrooms, a dress-in area and hot drinks at the boathouse, and car parking is free. Bus parking, a lunch space and how a wet day is handled are not stated, so it is worth a call.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give two different answers for when tours actually run. One says the season is February to November, while the booking request form will only take dates between April 1 and October 15. If you are looking at the shoulder months, worth settling when you book.
Sources disagree. The youngest child they will take depends on which boat you get. The open Zodiac prices children from 5, and the covered cabin boat is the one they describe as suitable from age 3. Ask for the cabin boat by name when you book a group of little ones.
