What it actually looks like

Our note
Most of this one is outside on a gravel trail with a steep grade, so bring rain gear and raise the wheelchair question early if you need to. The April to August window is the tight end of the school year, so book well ahead.

What the children do

A two hour program in the museum's West Coast Garden and First Nations Gallery about the native plants of northern Vancouver Island and how local First Nations cultivate and harvest them. It runs April to August only. Most of it is outdoors, and the museum warns that the gravel trail around the building has a steep grade that may not suit some wheelchairs in wet weather.

Walk the garden trail looking at native plants, examine the materials used in tools and regalia in the gallery, then make compostable pots and plant seeds to take home.

Good to know

Washrooms and a picnic area on site, and the building itself is wheelchair accessible. Part of this one is outside and there is nothing published about a wet weather plan, so ask when you book.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different grade ranges for the colonization program. One says grades 8 to 12 and the booking form says 6 to 12. If you have a grade 6 or 7 class, ask before you count on it.
Sources disagree. They give two different grade ranges for the archaeology program, one starting at grade 7 and one at grade 6. A grade 6 class may or may not be eligible, so check when you book.
Sources disagree. The Haig-Brown tour is described as two hours in one place and one hour in another. Plan your bus for the longer one and confirm the length when you book.
