What it actually looks like

Our note
Getting there is the hard part. The last 16km off Highway 19 is gravel and takes about half an hour, chains are mandatory for every vehicle including four wheel drives, and the site warns that phone directions send you off the highway too soon. Lifts only run Saturday, Sunday and select Mondays, and school groups are slotted onto those Mondays, so pick a date with Barb early. No group price is published and tickets cannot be bought online, so settle both when you book.

What the children do

Mount Cain takes group and school bookings by email. The tickets page says to contact Barb at bcolbourne@mountcain.com, and no group or school rate is published anywhere on the site. The events calendar has listed school group days on Mondays through January, February and March, and the rentals page says the three day rates cover Saturday, Sunday and School Group Mondays when only the lower lifts are operating. Children 12 and under ride the lifts free but still need a valid pass and a waiver signed by a guardian. Youth 13 to 18 pay $38 for a day pass and adults $74 as non members or $64 as members, and none of those figures include GST.

Ride the beginner handle tow or a T-bar and ski or snowboard the 21 runs, a fifth of which are rated beginner. On the Mondays set aside for school groups only the lower lifts run, so the whole day stays on the lower mountain. Snowshoeing around the meadows and forest is the other option, with snowshoes rented from the ski shop.

Good to know

Children 12 and under ride the lifts free and rental helmets are included, but no price for a group is published. There is no street address, the last stretch of road is gravel with chains required, and washrooms, an indoor lunch space and bus parking are not described anywhere, so it is worth a call before you book.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different days. One says Saturday, Sunday and select Mondays, the other says Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Mondays are the days school groups get, so settle the date when you book.
Sources disagree. The beginner package is priced two ways on their site, $47.25 plus tax on one page and $48 on the other. Ask which one applies when you book.

Restrictions
CARRYING CHAINS IS MANDATORY! You must have chains that fit your vehicle, chains that you know how to use, chains that you intend to use!. Chains may be required for going both up and down the access road. Vehicles without chains will be denied access.. Actually putting tire-chains ON is often REQUIRED FOR ALL VEHICLES, including 4x4's with good snow tires.. DO NOT use your phone for instructions, Google Maps, iMaps, etc. will have you turn off the highway too soon.. Children 12 years and under are free to ride the lifts but must have a valid lift pass and have the waiver signed by a guardian.. Tickets are not for sale online.. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. Dogs are not allowed on the ski hill.. When we are closed the road is not maintained and folks are reminded not to trespass on the ski hill..
