Our note
The forest site is picked by them, not by you, so ask where it is and how far the walk in is before you agree a date. Four to five hours including a woodland scavenger hunt suits a class that is already used to walking. The workshop itself is free but the bus is not.
What the children do
A workshop on local biodiversity, ecosystem services and environmental sustainability, covering flora and fauna, food chains, connectivity and human impacts in the biosphere region. It is made up of a classroom presentation, classroom activities on soil types and food webs, and then a field trip to a forested area chosen by the organisers where the class does a scavenger hunt for local plant species. The site says the whole thing runs about 4 to 5 hours. It is free, but the class arranges and pays for its own travel to the forest.
Listen to a presentation, then handle soil types and build food webs at tables. Outdoors they walk in a forest and hunt for named local plants on a scavenger list.
Good to know
Part classroom, part forest, so boots and layers matter and the outdoor half has no shelter mentioned. Washrooms at the forest site, lunch arrangements and how many adults have to come are all unstated, so ask when you book.
