Our note
This one is free but you have to apply, and the places for this school year have already gone. Only three adults may come with the class, counting the teacher, so plan your helpers around that number. Ask when applications open again, because dates for the whole year are set in early September.

What the children do

A year long series of five field trips for one class, designed and led by the Shoots with Roots coordinator, a certified teacher with a master's in special education. The visits run soil in September or October, trees in October or November, signs of spring in February or March, pollination in April or May, and a reflection and celebration visit in May or June. Grades 1 to 3 have priority in the application process and grades 1 to 7, including K and 1 classes, are encouraged to apply for the spaces left over. Visits are Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings from 9:30 to noon and are all scheduled in early September. Each class may bring a maximum of three adults including the teacher, plus any extra adult a particular student needs. The programme is free, paid for by donors rather than by school districts, and applications for the 2026-27 school year are closed.

Rake up a pile of leaves and play in it, then dig into how those leaves turn into soil. Learn to identify local trees through games, plant peas to take back to school, and become pollinators themselves in the spring. Every visit has an introduction, a snack break and a talking stick circle at the end, and the children build a circle journal across the year that becomes a poster on the last visit.

Good to know

Mornings from 9:30 to noon, rain or shine, so the children need proper coats and boots. Washrooms on site are accessible and mostly private and gender neutral, and there are wheelchair accessible planters in the food garden.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give two different addresses for the person who runs the school programs, one short and one long form of the same name. If one bounces, try the other, or use the general garden address. Worth settling when you book.
Washrooms
Accessible washrooms can be found at the Welcome and Interpretive Centre, Pool House Gift Shop and Milner House. Most of our washrooms are private and gender neutral. There are gendered washrooms with stalls in Milner House. We rarely visit these washrooms with school groups or day camps.

Rain backup
Our programs run rain or shine. Please discuss appropriate clothing and footwear with your students. We may cancel a program on the rare occasion that extreme weather such as high winds or heavy snow presents a safety risk.
Strollers
A 6 or 8 person shuttle cart is available to transport guests from the Welcome and Interpretive Centre down to Milner House and back. It can accommodate collapsible wheelchairs, walkers and strollers on the back. The Milner property is a long, gentle slope of trails and roadways that some guests with wheelchairs, walkers or strollers may find challenging to push back up.
Wheelchair access
The Welcome Centre, teaching shelter, and our indoor classroom space are wheelchair accessible. Our trails are a mixture of hard-packed gravel, wooden plank boardwalks, and woodchip trails. We have wheelchair accessible gardening planters in our Food Garden. There are some areas, such as rock paths, steps, and lawns, that may require wheelchair users to take an alternate route. We do our best to use wheelchair accessible routes for the whole group during school programs.
