What it actually looks like

Photos from McMillan Arts Centre - The MAC's website
Our note
They open at 11 and close at 3, Tuesday to Sunday, which is a narrow window for a morning outing and no use at all on a Monday. Nothing on their site is written for children's groups, so ring first and ask what a group of small children can actually do while they are there.

What the children do

A walk in visit to the MAC's exhibition galleries and its gift shop. The building holds the Concert Gallery, the Oceanside Gallery and the Nemeth Gallery, and the exhibition schedule changes monthly, with the year's hang and reception dates published in advance. Artists in residence work in the building on most days it is open, and the Nemeth Gallery has shown work by the Creative Kids classes. The gift shop sells cards, jewellery, glass, pottery, textiles, wood and prints by local artists. No admission price is published, and nothing on the site describes a booking route or a rate for a school or daycare group.

Walk through the three galleries to look at the paintings, textiles, glass and pottery on show, and watch an artist in residence working on a day when one is in.

Good to know

It is a 1913 schoolhouse and the site says nothing about washrooms, a room to eat in, or where a bus can stop. The community garden at the back of the building is open most of the day and is the obvious fallback for eating outside.

Sources disagree. Two different phone numbers for the same place. The map panel on their home page gives one, and their contact page and room rentals page both give the other. We use the contact page number. If it does not answer, try the other.
