What it actually looks like

Our note
Between the height rule and the no food rule this is a hard fit for a young group, and the cabin cruiser version of the same trip is the gentler choice. Departure times move with the tide, so ask what time you would actually be leaving before you commit.

What the children do

A 2.5 to 3 hour black bear watching trip from Ucluelet on an open 12 passenger Zodiac. The page states a height requirement of 4 feet 8 inches or 142 centimetres, and the price list states that infants aged 0 to 2 are not permitted. Departures follow the low tide. No food or drink other than water may be brought on a bear tour.

Put on a flotation suit, sit in an open boat and travel along the shoreline at low tide watching for black bears turning over rocks to find crabs.

Good to know

Flotation suits are provided and parking is free, but there is no proper toilet on board, no cover from the weather, and no food allowed. The height limit and the tide driven departure time are both worth settling on the phone.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give different answers for when bear watching runs from Ucluelet. One says mid April to the end of September, another says April 15 to October 15. If you are looking at late September or October, check the dates when you book.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages disagree about when whale watching starts in Ucluelet. The Ucluelet page says early February, the home page says March. Worth settling when you book if you want an early spring date.
Sources disagree. The site says the Ucluelet boats take children 3 and older, but the private tour listing says all ages. If anyone under three is coming, ask whether they can be on an Ucluelet boat at all before you plan around it.
Sources disagree. The six hour kayak tour from Ucluelet is listed as ages 12 and up in the tour details and ages 4 and up in the price list on the same page. It is a long trip in open ocean swell. Settle the age on the phone before you book.
