What it actually looks like

Our note
The ask here is real: paddling 30 to 45 minutes at a stretch in ocean swell is a lot for an eight year old, and the harbour tour is the gentler version of the same idea. Lunch is not provided, so everyone brings their own.

What the children do

A 4 hour guided sea kayak tour that leaves the shelter of Ucluelet harbour for the shoreline of northern Barkley Sound, priced the same for every age at $130.38 and run by Paddle West Kayaking. The site says beginners are welcome but that paddlers must be comfortable in ocean swell and unprotected water and able to paddle for 30 to 45 minutes without a rest. There is a stop on land for a lunch you pack yourself.

Paddle out of the harbour into open swell for about four hours, along rocky shore and small islets, with rest stops and a stop on land to eat a packed lunch.

Good to know

Four hours on open water with a land stop for a packed lunch, at one flat price for all ages. There is no published school or daycare rate and no stated group maximum, so call to sort numbers.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give different answers for when bear watching runs from Ucluelet. One says mid April to the end of September, another says April 15 to October 15. If you are looking at late September or October, check the dates when you book.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages disagree about when whale watching starts in Ucluelet. The Ucluelet page says early February, the home page says March. Worth settling when you book if you want an early spring date.
Sources disagree. The site says the Ucluelet boats take children 3 and older, but the private tour listing says all ages. If anyone under three is coming, ask whether they can be on an Ucluelet boat at all before you plan around it.
Sources disagree. The six hour kayak tour from Ucluelet is listed as ages 12 and up in the tour details and ages 4 and up in the price list on the same page. It is a long trip in open ocean swell. Settle the age on the phone before you book.
