What it actually looks like

Our note
Nobody guides you once you land, so an adult has to set the pace and decide how far to go. The crossing is by zodiac and the site does not say whether the zodiac height rule applies here, which is the first thing to ask.

What the children do

A boat drop off from Tofino to the Big Tree trailhead on Meares Island, where guests walk the 1.2 km wooden boardwalk through old growth rainforest on their own. The site lists the tour as all ages and 1.5 to 3 hours, with adults $37.10, youth 13 to 18 $31.80, children 4 to 12 $26.50, and an infant rate for ages 3 and under. Hiking the boardwalk briskly takes about 40 minutes, most guests spend 1 to 1.5 hours, and a full 4 km natural loop beyond the boardwalk adds about 1.5 hours. The crossing is made by zodiac, dogs are not permitted, and the site notes the boardwalk is split logs that may be soft, slippery or missing.

Cross by boat, then walk a narrow wooden boardwalk of split logs through old growth forest, looking up at cedars six metres across, and turn back whenever they have had enough.

Good to know

Cheapest of the Tofino trips and the only self guided one, but the boardwalk has no railings described, no washroom on the island and boards that can be soft or missing. Not recommended for anyone using a mobility aid, and strollers are not mentioned at all.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages disagree about how many toilets are on the big Tofino whale boat. One says two, the other says one. Either way there is a toilet on board, so it only matters if you are bringing a large group of small children.
Washrooms
Depending on what vessel you are travelling on during your tour you may or may not have access to a washroom. Our larger vessels all have washrooms onboard for use. On our smaller vessels including our Zodiacs, we have small marine toilets that are for emergency use only.
Lunch space
Snacks and drinks are allowed on board the Tofino whale watching and sea otter vessels. Food and scented items are not allowed on bear watching tours. The site does not describe an indoor lunch space on shore.
Rain backup
Our tours are Rain or Shine and we ask that you check the forecast prior to arriving for your departure and dress accordingly. On occasion, if the sea conditions are too rough we will cancel or delay our departures.

Bus parking
In Tofino, we offer a large parking lot for our guests. This includes parking for RV motorhomes. All parking is FREE with your tour. The site describes guest and RV parking and does not mention bus parking.
