What it actually looks like

Our note
Forty five minutes in a dark room with very loud wraparound sound is a lot for under fives, so ask about the monthly sensory sensitive screening if any of your group would find that hard. The film schedule is set by the theatre rather than by you, so pick your date around the title you want.

What the children do

A school group books onto a film from the theatre's current daily schedule. Scheduled films begin on the hour and last about 45 minutes. Many IMAX films come with an Educator Guide of activities and discussion points, and a film can be previewed in advance. Bookings need at least five business days' notice. No current group ticket rate is published, so ask for a quote when you book.

Sit in a raked theatre seat in the dark for about 45 minutes and watch a documentary on a screen six storeys high, with the sound coming from all around them.

Good to know

Everything is indoors with washrooms in the building and step free access through the main ramped entrance. There is no published group rate, no stated maximum group size and no indoor lunch space, so ask about all three when you email.

Sources disagree. Their pages give two different answers on how much notice to give. One says two business days, the other says five. Five is on the page they update most, so allow that and you are safe either way.
Sources disagree. One page says arrive fifteen minutes early and their printed booking guide says thirty. With a group of small children and any snacks to collect, thirty is the safer plan.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different numbers of wheelchair spaces, six on one and eight on the other. If you need more than one space, say so when you book rather than counting on either number.
Sources disagree. Their pages disagree about when the group office is open, one says nine to four and the other nine to five. Ring in the morning and you will reach someone either way.
Washrooms
During a Hollywood feature there are three stairs to access the washrooms because the gift shop is closed. For step free access, exit through the doors you came in by and ask a staff member or the security desk for the Royal BC Museum accessible washroom.
