What it actually looks like

Our note
Free for everyone under 18 makes this one of the cheapest outings in the region - you are only paying for the adults. It is a big outdoor site with stairs, gravel and sea wind, and there is nothing to buy on site, so bring water and lunch and plan on the picnic tables rather than a cafe.

What the children do

A self-guided visit to the two historic sites, entering through the Welcome Centre where groups pay, pick up a site guide and can collect an Xplorers booklet for the children. Visitors tour the gun batteries, underground rooms, the Casemates Barracks exhibits, the Fortress Plotting Room, Fisgard Lighthouse, the Garry Oak Learning Meadow, the Historic Nature Trail and three beaches. Admission is free for youth 17 and under; adults are $10.00 daily, seniors $8.50 and a commercial group is $8.50 per person. Guided tours and special programs are charged separately.

Children walk the paths between the gun batteries, go into the underground magazines and plotting rooms, cross the causeway and climb the stairs inside Fisgard Lighthouse to the upper floor, and follow the packed-gravel trail through the Garry Oak Learning Meadow down to the beaches.

Good to know

Washrooms on site including accessible and gender-inclusive ones with change tables, outdoor picnic areas, and free admission for anyone 17 and under. There are no indoor eating areas, no food for sale, and bus parking is not mentioned anywhere - worth a call before a big group comes.

Sources disagree. Their teacher page lists a washroom by the front kiosk, but their accessibility page says it is closed for renovation. Ask which washrooms are open.
Washrooms
There are washrooms located on site, outside the front kiosk and inside the Fort walls. Children's change tables are available in the gender-inclusive washrooms at the lighthouse and in the women's washrooms at the Second World War Officer's Quarters. The washroom by the main entrance is temporarily closed for renovation.
Lunch space
Picnic areas are available near our parking lot and inside the Fort. There are no indoor eating areas. There is no food or drink available for purchase on site. There is, however, a water fountain.
Rain backup
Our programs run rain or shine. Ensure students are dressed for the weather, including outdoor footwear.

Wheelchair access
Wheelchair-accessible washrooms are located near the Welcome Centre in the parking lot as well as at the lighthouse; four designated accessible parking stalls are available; a folding, manual wheelchair is available for day use from the Welcome Centre. Because the buildings are protected as culturally significant locations, some areas are not universally accessible: the curved ramp up to the lighthouse has a very steep section with a 27% slope, and many rooms are reached only by a flight of stairs.

Restrictions
Emphasize to your group that they cannot climb or stand on old fort walls or buildings.. There is no food or drink available for purchase on site. Please ensure all group members bring a lunch or eat beforehand.. Chaperones and teachers are expected to be available for their students at all times.. Registered service animals are welcome within the site and historic buildings. Please ensure to have your Guide Dog and Service Animal Certification with you when visiting.
