What it actually looks like

Our note
The price is the one thing the site will not tell you - you have to phone for it, so ask about the program fee and adult admission in the same call. Everything happens outdoors and in an unheated lighthouse by the ocean, there are no breaks in the ninety minutes, and the site advises a snack outside the kiosk before you start.

What the children do

A curriculum-based school program at Fisgard Lighthouse in which a costumed interpreter teaches students, through games and activities, what life as a lightkeeper was like 150 years ago, how a lighthouse works and why it was built where it was. The teacher information page says school programs run 1.5 hours with no breaks and that groups check in 15 minutes before the scheduled start. The fee is not published: the site says to call or email to book a program and get fee information. Programs are available in English, French or a mix of both.

Children explore Fisgard Lighthouse with a costumed interpreter, play games and do activities about a lightkeeper's daily work, and talk about how weather, the sea and the location shaped the families who lived there.

Good to know

Washrooms on site and picnic areas outdoors, but no indoor eating area and nothing to buy, so bring lunch and water. Programs run rain or shine in a windy coastal spot, and the program fee, group size limits and chaperone ratio are not published - all worth asking when you phone to book.

Sources disagree. Their teacher page lists a washroom by the front kiosk, but their accessibility page says it is closed for renovation. Ask which washrooms are open.
Washrooms
There are washrooms located on site, outside the front kiosk and inside the Fort walls. Children's change tables are available in the gender-inclusive washrooms at the lighthouse and in the women's washrooms at the Second World War Officer's Quarters. The washroom by the main entrance is temporarily closed for renovation.
Lunch space
Picnic areas are available near our parking lot and inside the Fort. There are no indoor eating areas. There is no food or drink available for purchase on site. There is, however, a water fountain.
Rain backup
Our programs run rain or shine. Ensure students are dressed for the weather, including outdoor footwear.

Wheelchair access
Wheelchair-accessible washrooms are located near the Welcome Centre in the parking lot as well as at the lighthouse; four designated accessible parking stalls are available; a folding, manual wheelchair is available for day use from the Welcome Centre. Because the buildings are protected as culturally significant locations, some areas are not universally accessible: the curved ramp up to the lighthouse has a very steep section with a 27% slope, and many rooms are reached only by a flight of stairs.

Please ensure all group members bring a lunch or eat beforehand.. Chaperones and teachers are expected to be available for their students at all times.. Registered service animals are welcome within the site and historic buildings. Please ensure to have your Guide Dog and Service Animal Certification with you when visiting.
