Fit to Serve (grades 7-12)
What it actually looks like
What the children do
A curriculum-based school program at the fort in which students are assigned to teams and given mental and physical challenges to see if they have what it takes to serve. A costumed interpreter teaches the role of coastal defence and Canada's involvement in the First and Second World Wars, and the hardships faced by the men and women stationed at Fort Rodd Hill. The teacher information page says school programs run 1.5 hours with no breaks and that groups check in 15 minutes early; for the Platoon Challenge tour it asks teachers to arrange students into groups of no more than six before arriving. The fee is not published - call or email to book.
Students work in teams through physical and mental challenges around the fort, practise communicating with military hand signals and Morse code, and try the tests recruits had to pass to enlist.
Good to know
Outdoor site with washrooms and picnic areas but no indoor eating space and nothing for sale, so bring lunch and water. Programs run rain or shine, and the price, capacity and chaperone expectations are not on the site - confirm by phone.
