What it actually looks like

Our note
This is a four day wilderness camping trip rather than a day out. The youngest they take is eight, everyone sleeps in tents with a composting toilet and outdoor propane showers, and once the water taxi leaves there is no easy way off the beach until day four. If you are pricing it for a group, ask about the group discount they mention on the home page but never put a number on.

What the children do

A 4 day, 3 night guided sea kayaking trip from a tented basecamp at Warden Beach, on the western boundary of the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. The published rate is $1950.00 per youth aged 8 to 16 and $2050.00 per adult aged 16 and over, both plus 5 percent GST. The rate covers the round trip water taxi from Telegraph Cove, all kayaking and camping gear, tents with raised beds, sleeping bags and pillows, every meal from lunch on day one to breakfast on day four, and a 3 hour whale watching trip on the final day. Groups meet at the private beach at 1584 Bauza Creek Road at 9:30 am and the water taxi leaves at 10:00 am. Parking at the base is included. Maximum group size is 12 participants with at least two guides. The site says to ask about group discounts but does not publish one.

Ride a water taxi half an hour from Telegraph Cove out to a beach camp, then sleep three nights in a tent on a raised bed under old growth forest. Each full day is four to six hours in a double kayak on Johnstone Strait watching for orcas, humpbacks, sea lions and eagles, with breaks for a picnic lunch. Between paddles there are rainforest and waterfall hikes, meals at the camp kitchen and a fire on the pebble beach.

Good to know

Meals, kayaks, gear, tents and the boat transfer are all included, the camp has a composting toilet and hot showers, and parking at the Telegraph Cove base is free. Nothing is published about a school or daycare rate, how many adults have to come, or how big the deposit is, so plan on a call before you commit.
