Self-guided museum and Heritage Air Park visit
What it actually looks like
What the children do
The museum's self guided route starts at the dawn of military aviation in the First World War, loops through the Second World War, Korea, the Cold War and UN peacekeeping, then a squadron section, and ends at Afghanistan and post 9/11. Along the way are a CF-101 Voodoo ejection seat, a hands on air traffic control centre, an Argus 18 cylinder engine and a viewing lounge showing short films, plus activity books for children and youth. The Heritage Air Park a short distance along Military Row holds aircraft that have flown at 19 Wing, along with the Heritage Stones, the search and rescue memorial and the Clarkston Memorial. Admission is by donation.
Follow the gallery loop at their own pace, try the CF-101 Voodoo ejection seat and the hands on air traffic control display, sit in the viewing lounge for a short film and work through an activity book. Outside at the air park they can walk right up to parked aircraft and around the memorials.
Good to know
There is a small car park at the museum with more space across the road at the Canex, and the air park has parking at its entrance. Washrooms, an indoor lunch spot and rain cover are not mentioned at all, so those are worth a call before you go.
