What it actually looks like

Our note
Everything is on their website, so you can read the transcript in advance and judge how much a class will follow. The subject is the uprooting and internment of Japanese Canadians, which is worth preparing younger children for.

What the children do

A self guided walking tour of the Japanese Canadian neighbourhood that stood in Chemainus around 1940. The audio files and a printable transcript are both published free on the museum's own website. The tour starts at the museum beside Waterwheel Park and covers the area between Oak, Maple, Esplanade and Pine Streets. It is meant to go alongside the None Came Back exhibit inside the museum.

Walk a few town blocks between Oak, Maple, Esplanade and Pine Streets, stopping to listen to the recording at each point and looking at where the houses and shops used to stand.

Good to know

This part is outdoors on town streets, so there is no shelter and no toilet on the route. Pair it with a visit inside the museum if you need somewhere indoors and dry.
