What it actually looks like

Our note
Five days is a long way from home for a first residential trip, so it suits a group that has already slept away together. The embryo lab is the reason to pick this length over the shorter ones, because the daily checks only work if you are there for four nights. Boots and full rain gear matter more than anything else you pack; the centre's own advice is that the trail will be muddy and the weather is unpredictable.

What the children do

A residential marine biology field trip on the BMSC campus. The published price includes accommodation, meals, instructional programming, laboratory and classroom facilities, and educational materials, and the site describes it as an estimated cost per person starting at $1,275. Final pricing is based on group size, accommodation requirements, season, and selected educational activities, and transport to and from Bamfield is not included. Bookings must be in multiples of 12 people to meet Transport Canada vessel capacity rules. This is the only length that can include the Reproduction of Marine Invertebrates lab, where a culture of sea urchin or sand dollar embryos set up on the first day is checked for about ten minutes each following day.

They live on campus for five days and move between the labs, the docks and the shoreline. They fertilise sea urchin eggs on the first day and come back each morning to watch the embryos change, identify seaweeds with a key, and design and run their own experiment with animals from the tanks before presenting what they found. Outside they crew a skiff for oceanography, dredge from the Alta, spend three or four hours in the tide pools at Brady's Beach, walk the rainforest trail, and make prints and cyanotypes from things they collected.

Good to know

Meals are cooked on site and eaten in a peanut free dining hall that handles most dietary needs, everyone sleeps in campus dorms, and there are washrooms and showers on each floor. How many adults have to come, whether chaperones pay the same, step free access and where a bus parks are not written down, and the price is quoted per group, so ask for a written quote before you apply.

Sources disagree. Their own pages do not agree on who these trips are for. One says high school and university students, another says learners of all ages, and the bursary page says classes from kindergarten to grade 12 can apply. Ask what they will actually take for your group's ages before you plan anything else.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different costs. One says about $285 a person a night, the other starts at $713 a person for two nights and three days. We use the higher, newer one. Ask them for a written quote for your dates, because the final price depends on your group size and which activities you pick.
Washrooms
Showers and toilets are conveniently located on each floor and are maintained to support regular use by residents. Each floor has 2-4 bathrooms and 2-4 showers. We provide hand soap, toilet paper, and paper towels.
Lunch space
The BMSC dining hall is a peanut-free facility and we are able to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free meal options. Meal hours are normally Breakfast 7:30 to 8:00 am, Lunch 12:30 to 1:00 pm, Dinner 6:00 to 6:30 pm.
