What it actually looks like

Our note
Four days is enough for the whole coastline to sink in, and it is also four nights of shared bunk rooms and full days outdoors in whatever weather arrives. The centre builds each itinerary with you, so send them the topics your group is already working on and they will try to fit activities around them. Two of the best trips, the fast boat around Barkley Sound and the Kiixin village tour, cost extra, so ask what they add before you agree to the itinerary.

What the children do

A residential marine biology field trip on the BMSC campus. The published price includes accommodation, meals, instructional programming, laboratory and classroom facilities, and educational materials, and the site describes it as an estimated cost per person starting at $994. Final pricing is based on group size, accommodation requirements, season, and selected educational activities, and transport to and from Bamfield is not included. Bookings must be in multiples of 12 people to meet Transport Canada vessel capacity rules. The extra day makes room for longer activities such as the three to four hour intertidal trip to Brady's Beach, the Eagle Bay rocky shore, the experimental marine biology lab and the four hour Kiixin village tour led by a Huu-ay-aht guide, which carries an extra cost.

They settle into a dorm room and then work as a small field crew for four days. In the labs they identify live invertebrates and seaweeds, keep a journal, and set up their own experiments with animals from the tanks. Outside they take water measurements from a skiff in Grappler Inlet, dredge the sea floor from the Alta, pick through tide pools at low tide on Brady's Beach and Eagle Bay, walk the old growth rainforest trail in boots, and go down to the dock after dark to look for bioluminescence.

Good to know

Meals are cooked on site and eaten in a peanut free dining hall that handles most dietary needs, everyone sleeps in campus dorms, and there are washrooms and showers on each floor. How many adults have to come, whether chaperones pay the same, step free access and where a bus parks are not written down, and the price is quoted per group, so ask for a written quote before you apply.

Sources disagree. Their own pages do not agree on who these trips are for. One says high school and university students, another says learners of all ages, and the bursary page says classes from kindergarten to grade 12 can apply. Ask what they will actually take for your group's ages before you plan anything else.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different costs. One says about $285 a person a night, the other starts at $713 a person for two nights and three days. We use the higher, newer one. Ask them for a written quote for your dates, because the final price depends on your group size and which activities you pick.
Washrooms
Showers and toilets are conveniently located on each floor and are maintained to support regular use by residents. Each floor has 2-4 bathrooms and 2-4 showers. We provide hand soap, toilet paper, and paper towels.
Lunch space
The BMSC dining hall is a peanut-free facility and we are able to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free meal options. Meal hours are normally Breakfast 7:30 to 8:00 am, Lunch 12:30 to 1:00 pm, Dinner 6:00 to 6:30 pm.
