What it actually looks like

Our note
This is a sleepover trip, not a day out. Children share bunk rooms, eat in the cafeteria and are on boats and slippery rock for a good part of each day, and boots and rain gear are on the centre's own packing list. Getting there is the real planning job, because the last stretch from Port Alberni is about 76 km of logging road with no gas and no cell service, and travel is not in the price. Ask about the bursaries early; they are offered for a whole class as well as for individual students, and they close before the trip season.

What the children do

A residential marine biology field trip on the BMSC campus. The published price includes accommodation, meals, instructional programming, laboratory and classroom facilities, and educational materials, and the site describes it as an estimated cost per person starting at $713. Final pricing is based on group size, accommodation requirements, season, and selected educational activities, and transport to and from Bamfield is not included. Bookings must be in multiples of 12 people to meet Transport Canada vessel capacity rules, and the centre's own sample itinerary for this length is built for 24 people including teachers and chaperones. Groups other than schools use the same program; the centre lists Girl Guides, Scouts, First Nations educational events and artist retreats among past visitors. Bursaries can be requested for a whole class or for individual students when you apply.

They arrive by bus, check in at the Whale Lab, put their bags in a dorm room, then walk the campus on a safety orientation. In the labs they handle live invertebrates from Barkley Sound and hunt through a drop of seawater for plankton under a microscope. Outside they ride a skiff up Grappler Inlet to measure the water, dredge the sea floor from the Alta, shuttle across by boat and hike about twenty minutes to Brady's Beach to work the tide pools at low tide, and finish with a guided walk through the rainforest.

Good to know

Meals are cooked on site and eaten in a peanut free dining hall that handles most dietary needs, everyone sleeps in campus dorms, and there are washrooms and showers on each floor. How many adults have to come, whether chaperones pay the same, step free access and where a bus parks are not written down, and the price is quoted per group, so ask for a written quote before you apply.

Sources disagree. Their own pages do not agree on who these trips are for. One says high school and university students, another says learners of all ages, and the bursary page says classes from kindergarten to grade 12 can apply. Ask what they will actually take for your group's ages before you plan anything else.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different costs. One says about $285 a person a night, the other starts at $713 a person for two nights and three days. We use the higher, newer one. Ask them for a written quote for your dates, because the final price depends on your group size and which activities you pick.
Washrooms
Showers and toilets are conveniently located on each floor and are maintained to support regular use by residents. Each floor has 2-4 bathrooms and 2-4 showers. We provide hand soap, toilet paper, and paper towels.
Lunch space
The BMSC dining hall is a peanut-free facility and we are able to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free meal options. Meal hours are normally Breakfast 7:30 to 8:00 am, Lunch 12:30 to 1:00 pm, Dinner 6:00 to 6:30 pm.
